ATTENDANCE POLICY
The Miron Student Center is composed of student staff members whose primary purpose at Kean University is to obtain an education and so the building shift schedules are designed to correlate with the Kean academic schedule for each semester.
Attendance
All Student Employees must work the hours that they scheduled upon their acceptance of employment. If you miss your shift, you are not permitted to make those hours up unless:
You obtain your supervisor’s permission
You switch shifts with someone else
You do not go over 20 hours in the week
You are asked to work by your supervisor
If you are unable to work due to illness or family emergency, you must contact your supervisor at least (3) three hours in advance of your shift. You also are responsible to call the Miron Student Center Information Desk at (908)737-5222 to report your absence. This call must occur the day of the shift and prior to the start of your shift. *When working the opening shift, please email your managers and supervisors.
If you are scheduled to work a shift, and cannot make it in, you are responsible for finding a replacement for the scheduled shift.
You will be allowed a total of (2) two call outs without coverage per semester. Upon review by the department management team and a meeting with your professional supervisor, the second occurrence you receive a written warning. Any additional occurrences will be followed by probation and possible suspension.
If a Student Employee requires time off from scheduled hours, other than the case of illness or family emergency, it must be requested at least one (1) week in advance.
The Student Employee is responsible for finding a replacement for their shifts during the specified time period.
When a replacement worker is found, both Student Employees must complete a Shift Change Form.
Shift Change Forms must be submitted to the Graduate Assistant or professional supervisor of your department and approved prior to the date of the switch date (24 business hours prior)
If a replacement worker cannot be found, after several attempts, the Student Employee should contact their Graduate Assistant of the Department or the supervisor and inform the situation.
It is the Student Employees responsibility to inform their supervisor of their absence. Failure to do so will result in the following:
First occurrence :written warning, probation or suspension
Second occurrence: possible termination of employment
Last two weeks of each semester “Exam Weeks”: Employees are required to work through exam weeks. No “Call Outs” are permitted; however, staff members are permitted to change shifts/find shift coverage.
Student Employees are expected to work all scheduled hours. If you must take off during this period, you find coverage and complete the Change of Shift/Coverage of Shift form.
If the occasion arises that you cannot find a replacement you are to consult with your Graduate Assistant/Supervisor immediately
Major University Events (Kean Day, Homecoming, Open House, Pep Rally, Unity Week, Concerts, Cultural Events and Parties, Meet the Greeks)
Student Employees are expected to work all of their scheduled hours. If you must take off during this period, you must find another Student Employee to cover the hours in question.
If the occasion arises that you cannot find a replacement you are to consult with your Graduate Assistant or professional supervisor immediately.
Failure to work scheduled hours may result in suspension or termination.
You are expected to report to work on time, daily to ensure a smooth transition between shifts. If tardiness becomes a problem, it will result in the following:
After two occurrences, the supervisor will give a verbal warning. The Student Employee is then considered to be on probation for 60 days, during which any further tardiness will be responded to with a written warning notice.
If a written warning notice is issued and tardiness continues, this will be considered grounds for suspension or termination of employment.
No Call/No Show is defined as when an employee fails to show up for a scheduled shift and does not call or notify a supervisor of their absence. A No Call/No Show will result in the following
First occurrence: One (1) week suspension without pay or use of sick time
Second occurrence: Employee voluntary termination
The Miron Student Center is often open when classes are not in session. Employees are required to work their scheduled hours. (An emergency schedule has been established). If the Miron Student Center is going to close early employees will be informed of the change as soon as the information is made available by the University.
An emergency schedule for each department is put together at the beginning of each semester with employees that live on campus or employees that live in close proximity to the University. These employees will be our first preference to come in and work. If you are unsure whether you are scheduled to work, contact your Graduate Assistant or professional supervisor for clarification. Please do not assume that because the University is closed (i.e., holidays, inclement weather, etc.) you do not have to come in for your shift.
